The New
Orleans Saints are Super Bowl
champions, and that means Jackson
can claim another title holder.
Jabari
Greer, a 2000 graduate of South Side
High School, recorded four tackles,
three solo, in Super Bowl XLIV,
which the Saints won, 31-17 over the
Indianapolis Colts.
The
Colts jumped out to an early 10-0
lead in the first quarter, and led
10-6 at halftime. But a gutsy onside
kick call by Saints head coach Sean
Payton was recovered by New Orleans,
and led to a Saints touchdown.
A Colts
touchdown and Saints field goal made
it 17-16, then New Orleans
quarterback Drew Brees hit tight end
Jeremy Shockey for a two-yard
touchdown, which along with the
two-point conversion, gave the
Saints the lead to stay.
Greer's
defensive back comrade Tracy
Porter sealed it with a 74-yard
interception return for a touchdown
late in the fourth quarter.
Several
of Greer's friends gathered in
Medina to watch the game. Ben King
has known Greer and his family since
they moved to Jackson, and was
thrilled to see his friend on the
big stage.
"It's
very exciting," he said. "He's
playing in the Super Bowl. It's
almost like I'm there."
Before
the game, King had some simple
instructions for his long-time
buddy.
"Jabari,"
he said, "bring home the ring. Bring
home the trophy."
He did.
