One group of area high schools were given a little something extra to smile about.

The non-profit dental ministry "Smiles and Blessings", in conjunction with the American Dental Associations "Give a Kid a Smile Day" gave 50 Jackson Central-Merry High School students a free dental visit Friday in honor of National Children's Dental Health Month.

The students dental care included everything from cleanings, fillings and if necessary, root canals. Organizers said children's health is everyone's responsibility, not just dentists and participation by the community raised dental health awareness.

"Maybe realize the importance of dental health for themselves and just get them motivated to take better care of their teeth," said Dr. John C. Williams, a pediatric dentist. "I think most of the ones I've seen are doing a good job. They really are."
